Charcoal in all its different forms is a crucial element of Earth’s ecosystem and is present almost everywhere. Artists’ charcoal is made by burning long sticks or vines in a space without air and as a result instead of burning properly the sticks become charred. It is a fragile, almost burned out material that can still leave strong marks.

In Hanna Saarikoski’s durational performance C, a silent figure made out of hundreds of artists’ charcoals participated in New Performance Turku Festival 2018 on Friday night at Manilla and on Saturday moving by the riverside from Tuomiokirkkosilta to the festival area.
